The Business Schools Association of Canada (BSAC) traces its roots back to 1957, from the Association of Canadian Schools of Commerce and Business Administration (ACSCBA). This informal group took on two missions, the first to enhance and promote higher education in management, and the second to provide a vital forum for scholarly research in management.
As the landscape of management education evolved, so did we. In the late 1960s, a clearer distinction emerged between various activities, leading to the formation of the Council of Deans of Faculties of Management and Business Administration of Canada (CDFMBAC). This new council took on the mission of globally representing Canadian schools while continuing the vital work of developing higher education in management. The focus on scholarly research was passed to the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada (ASAC), officially established as a non-profit organization in 1982.
In 1979, a significant restructuring of CDFMBAC resulted in the formal creation of the Canadian Federation of Deans of Management and Administration Studies (CFDMAS), which began administering scholarships and grants, both nationally and internationally.
Renamed the Canadian Federation of Business School Deans (CFBSD) in 1995, the organization refocused its efforts on promoting and improving higher education in management, harnessing its extensive network of Canadian schools and international partners. With offices moving over the years to Ottawa, Toronto, and Calgary, the organization made an important move in December 1997, establishing a permanent central secretariat in Montreal.
In 2013, we expanded our initiatives further by launching a network of research leaders within our member schools, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
In July 2020, we embraced a new identity as the Business Schools Association of Canada (BSAC), reflecting our growth and renewed commitment to our mission. In November 2022, a research fund was established to finance projects that advance understanding, improvement, and promotion of management education across Canada.
Our journey continues, fueled by a passion for excellence and a commitment to shaping the future of management education!
